The MALI SMO project (Little SMO) aims to introduce younger audiences to the museum’s themes and narrative methods: the cultural landscape, multimedia language as a storytelling tool, and the territory of the Slovenian community in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Through a series of workshops led by the museum’s curators and the artists who created the various installations, participants can get closer to the museum’s languages and encounter the richness of landscapes, languages, sounds, and cultural production that characterize the territory inhabited by the Slovenian minority in Italy.

Guided tours

Guided tours are an essential tool for approaching the museum and understanding the richness and layering of its content.

Tours are tailored to the size of the group, the age of the participants, and specific interests, in order to explore the museum’s various installations and touch on different themes: the history of the border, the linguistic variants present in the area, the abandoned landscape and the rural architecture that dots it, and the traditions, music, and rituals that characterize the region.

Mladi Vodiči / Young Guides Programme

Alongside the more traditional offer of guided tours by SMO’s museum mediators, for primary and lower-secondary school pupils visiting from Slovenia, the museum offers tours guided by students from the bilingual Petricig school in San Pietro al Natisone. This project is part of the mladi vodiči (young guides) programme, in which students from the bilingual school are trained to guide their peers through the museum in Slovenian, encouraging peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and the use of the Slovenian language outside the school setting.

Workshops

hree workshop proposals stem from three of the museum’s installations and are designed and led by the artists who conceived them.

These are Sound Postcards, Illustrated Story, and Memories of the Voice — three installations that, through different disciplines (sound art, animation, and interview), explore themes such as personal memories, the sound of the landscape, and storytelling. The workshops encourage young people to engage with and rework the themes present in the museum, while also learning how a multimedia installation is conceived, imagined, and created, together with the artist who curated it.

Workshops can be structured over one or more days, depending on the needs of each group. The programme adapts to the length of the workshop and the specific characteristics of the groups.

AUDIO POSTCARDS

Field recording: how to represent a landscape through its sounds

Audio Postcards is the last installation encountered in the SMO museum. Inside a dark room, visitors are immersed in true sound postcards: almost static videos projected on the wall, accompanied by a dynamic and deeply layered soundscape that, through listening, reveals unusual aspects of the landscape. The workshop aims to introduce young people to the specifics of field recording, focusing on one of the most overlooked senses — listening — in the narration of landscapes.

ILLUSTRATED HISTORY

Animation: how to tell a story through images

Storia illustrata è uno spazio del museo dedicato al racconto della storia attraverso l’illustrazione e l’animazione che raccoglie contributi animati di Moreno Tomasetig, illustratore attivo in Benečija e Cosimo Miorelli, artista di base a Berlino. Il laboratorio assume forme diverse a seconda degli artisti coinvolti esplorando il fumetto, la pittura o l’animazione come modalità di raccontare storie e atmosfere.

VOICE MEMORIES

Podcast and oral history: how to narrate historical processes through personal memories

The Memories of the Voice installation contains a series of everyday objects from which, by bringing a hand close, stories, memories, and short accounts emerge, audible through headphones. The workshop that grows out of this installation aims to teach young people how to collect testimonies, conduct interviews, and, through the accounts of witnesses, understand historical events and distant times.

Mali SMO

Together with Antonio della Marina, the artist who programmed SMO museum’s interactive elements, participants will take part in a robotics workshop in which they will imagine, design, and build a small multimedia installation telling one aspect of the history, traditions, or landscape of the Natisone Valleys.

The workshop will be divided into three phases:

1. In the first phase, the multimedia installations that bring the SMO museum to life will be opened up, and the technology behind them explored and presented;

2. in the second phase, participants will define the theme and story the installation will tell, and gather testimonies, interviews, and narrative material to support the installation;

3. the third phase will be dedicated to building a small installation: participants will learn the basic language for creating Arduino circuits and put this language into practice to tell their story.

Beneška Galerija Exhibitions

On the occasion of temporary exhibitions organized in the Beneška Galerija, a small gallery within the SMO museum’s spaces, guest artists may propose special activities related to the themes addressed in the exhibitions.
